Farmers in Bahawalpur, Yazman, Hasilpur and Ahmedpur East prepare for wheat sowing in late October and early November. Timely sowing, an approved variety and good seed are the basis of a good yield. This article summarises the Punjab Agriculture Department recommendations from last season (2025). Confirm this year's advice with your local extension office.

Best time to sow wheat

For the 2025 season the Punjab Agriculture Department gave 1 to 20 November as the ideal sowing window. After 20 November yield can fall by about one percent per day (15 to 20 kg per acre), and sowing after December can cut the yield by up to half. In cotton fields where picking runs late, clear the field right after the last picking and start preparation.

Approved varieties

The department list for irrigated areas included:

  • Sawera-24, Falak-24, Champion, Urooj-22, Nishan-21
  • Dilkash-20, Subhani-21, MH-21, Sadiq-21, Nawab-21
  • Akbar-19, Bhakkar Star-19, Ghazi-19, Rehbar-21, Faisalabad-2008 and others

Choose the variety for your area and soil with advice from the agriculture officer.

Seed

  • Use certified, disease-free seed with at least 85 percent germination
  • Last season a bag of certified seed cost Rs 5,500
  • For late sowing (21 November to 15 December) the advice was 60 kg seed per acre
  • Treat seed with a fungicide before sowing so every grain is coated
  • Seed grading is free at agriculture extension offices

Field preparation and fertiliser

Get the field laser-levelled and give a proper pre-sowing irrigation (rauni). Plough at two to three day intervals to kill weeds. Apply 8 to 10 tons per acre of well-rotted farmyard manure, and decide chemical fertiliser from a soil test and the agriculture officer.

Wheat rate and selling

Last year the government support price was Rs 3,500 per 40 kg. Mandi rates change daily: see wheat rate today, Bahawalpur mandi wheat rate and Yazman mandi wheat rate. To sell your wheat or seed, post a free ad in Kisan Bazar.
